Virtual tours and more

Improvements in technology are making access to the countryside even easier for those with limited mobility, neurodiversity or other access needs.

We’re working with partners to use these new technologies to provide virtual tours and more to enable people to “visit” the Chilterns without needing to leave the house, or to help with planning before a trip.

Virtual tour: Grim's Ditch

Grim’s Ditch is Buckinghamshire’s longest and largest heritage asset, but much of the history surrounding it still remains a mystery.

Our new interactive, 360 degree virtual tour allows the beauty and history of the monument and its surrounding area to be explored by anyone, wherever they are. Choose to follow our new walking trail, or explore the landscape panoramas as you wish – information boxes highlight aspects of the landscape, flora, fauna and interesting features along the way.

Accessibility features include narration, BSL translation, static text version, colour/size options.

Chalk, Cherries and Chairs

Our Chalk, Cherries and Chairs Landscape Partnership Scheme was funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the HS2 Community & Engagement Fund, and managed by the Chilterns Conservation Board.

Discover the timeline of the Chilterns

There has been a rich and varied geology and history in the Chilterns – from the Cretaceous Period, when shallow seas laid down the distinctive chalk of the area, right up to today’s working landscape.

Hillforts of the Chilterns

The Chilterns has one of the largest concentrations of hillforts in the UK. Created for a variety of reasons - from keeping livestock, to showing off status - these mounds, ditches and remnants include a whole range of prehistoric enclosures that were an important part of Iron Age life. Many have left a mark that can still be seen on the landscape today.
